Things To Do While You’re Waiting For An Agent/Publisher

You’ve poured you heart out in a novel. You’ve written it, edited it, re-edited it, and did a final polish. It’s taken up over a year of your life. At this point, you know your characters better than your family. Over the last year, you have spent more time with them. Then you’ve written queries, synopsis, and proposals and researched agents and publishers. Finally you’ve mailed or emailed your submissions.

It is very rare to find an agent or publisher who will get back to you right away. Most take anywhere from two to six months. Some take longer. It’s normal to feel a little out of sorts while you’re waiting considering you have devoted so much of your life to this novel. Here’s some things you can do while you’re waiting.

10. Go to lunch with friends and family members you haven’t had time for while you were writing your novel.

9. Clean your house. If you’re any thing like me, while you were in your creative muse, the dust collected on your furniture, and you’re having a hard time navigating through your livingroom.

8. Read a couple of novels.

7. Read some writing books.

6. Play a Facebook game.

5. Update your blog/website.

4. Start exercising.

3. Do something creative like planting flowers, learning a musical instrument, painting, or doing a craft project.

2. Do something productive you’ve been putting off such as organizing your kitchen or sorting your photographs.

1. Start your next novel. If your first novel is accepted, you’ll want to tell the agent/publisher what you’re working on now. If it’s rejected, you’ll feel better knowing if the first novel doesn’t get published, the next one will. Most people have one novel in them. But authors write more than one.
