Nosy Bits of Information About Andy and Caroline…

Undiscovered Treasures
(Book Three of the Appleton, WV Romantic Mystery series)
By Carole Brown

Why did I write this book?

Several years ago, my agent urged me to write a romance novel for a certain publishing group. I did, and while I was at it, decided to write about three friends, all living in the made up town of Appleton, WV. Each had their own story, but the romance books didn’t go anywhere (because I’m not a “per se” romance writer. But when a current editor asked me for a new series, I thought about these three books and wondered if I could turn them into light mysteries. Ta da: the Appleton, WV series was born!
How much of myself do I put into my books?

Almost always little dabs of this and that. I love antiques and flea markets, cats, flowers (including Caroline’s favorite: daisies) and coffee. If I drink tea, I’m a Tea Snob (same as Caroline). I’m clumsy and fall over practically nothing (Caroline too!).
What are your main characters like?

In Undiscovered Treasures, Caroline Gibson, is a “home-town” girl. She doesn’t have a lot of confidence in her own looks, is clumsy, and sometimes quite outspoken. But she’s loyal, trustworthy, and soft-hearted, always watching out for the “underdog,” helps her brother run a successful business, writes plays, and oversees the local youth organization at her church. palette2-free

Andy Carrington, on the other hand, is quiet, but confident in his own abilities, friendly, a dedicated Christian, and an up-and-coming famous artist. He’s best friends with Caroline’s brother, and grew up with him and Caroline. Best of all, he’s loved Caroline forever and trusts God to direct his and her life.
Where did I get the title for this book?

When I plotted for the third friend (Caroline), I decided a junk/antique/collectibles store would be fun and unique. It also fit her personality. Having a brother and sister run the store worked well with the plot and giving them both a bit of wittiness added interest to the novel. I also thought this title played into the emotional love story part of the plot. Caroline, always dreaming of a real live prince for her life, doesn’t realize that she already has one. It’s only when she discovers Andy’s virtues that she finally clasps the truth: Andy is her treasure, chosen by God, just for her.
white-cat-free

Why a cat in the story?

It played into Caroline’s personality very well. I can just see her volunteering at the local pet shelter. Angel, the cat, also was a ready (or not) listener when Caroline needed a sounding board.

How does the music box play into the plot?music-box-free

It’s a constant reminder–and not a very welcome one–that her life is somewhat unsatisfactory. She thinks it’s because she doesn’t have a “prince” riding up to save her from a mundane existence, but really, it’s more like the proverbial ostrich inserting his head into the sand, and unwilling to accept the will of God for her life.
Why have Caroline travel out of the U.S. when she’s such a homebody?

Having her travel, which she isn’t totally fond of, forces her to climb out of her comfort zone. She knows what she has to do–make an apology–whether everything turns out the way she wants it to or not, and because she has to travel a distance, she has plenty of time to ruminate on her “follies.” Overall, a good disciplinarian action for her.

Is there a spiritual thread?

Yes. Accepting God’s will for our lives. We can’t make things happen the way we want, and if we force the issue, most times, it turns out to be an unsatisfactory situation. Caroline has to learn that, and once she does, she couldn’t be happier.

Interviewing today Sir Joel PeterFront Cover1 w apple blossomman-Blair, the male protagonist in Knight in Shining Apron. . . Since Joel is helping figure out what’s going on in Starli Cameron’s life, and why all the the seemingly threats and odd incidents happening, I thought it best to ask Joel to give us some ideas about the mystery half of the book. Joel . . .

I know Starli speculated briefly and not quite convincingly that you might be the cause of some bad attitudes from some of her employees. What do you say to that speculation?thumbs down free

Rubbish. The thought might have been a passing one in Starli’s mind, but I’m sure with further contemplation, she realized that attitudes come inside an individual. I only encouraged and strove to become friends with all her employees. If they imagined otherwise, then that is their problem. I can only be myself and do as my God would have me do.

Moving on, what did you think of all the odd situations that arose throughout the book?

What bothered me the most was her brother-in-law’s treatment of Starli. I am a christian and strive to act like one, but he seriously pushed my buttons. I’m a bit of a pushover for the underdog, so it came easily to be quite annoyed at Roland Stratton’s overbearing and abusive attitude.

firecracker freeThe other little things that kept questions playing over and over in my mind were: the smoke bombed coatroom, the firecracker, the outdoors unscrewed light bulb, the scratched reception desk, and the unexpected Valentine’s candy heart–all of it kept us–Starli and me–on edge, wondering who could possibly be so annoying. And why. That was probably light-bulb freethe hardest, trying to decide who and why he or she would want to inflict aggravation on Starli when she was such a good employer.

I see. So it never occurred to you that she might be imagining all this?

Seriously? Only one time did I wonder if Starli was indeed overreacting, but that was before I truly comprehended the depth of her fear and mistrust of men, in particular.

Did you ever doubt you’d find the criminal behind it all?

I never even considered that eventually we wouldn’t discover who was responsible. I wavered between two different ones, and it was only toward the end that I suspected it could be someone else. Fortunately, a few small clues helped us find out the who and why.

Finally, I won’t say what it is, but how do you think the final incident played into the plot?

It was a horrible experience and nearly broke my heart to see how it hurt Starli, forgiveness freebut I think in three ways it benefited:

  • it brought the guilty party to justice
  • it gave closure to Starli’s bad memories and past suffering
  • and, finally, it drew Starli to the place where she could forgive and fully trust God for her future, which included me!

Thank you, Joel, for enlightening us on some of the more serious issues in this book.

Readers, be sure to let me know what romance means to you for a chance to win a Kindle copy of Knight in Shining Apron. As always, I’d love an honest review of the book, if you will, but not required. Thanks for reading!

Love is in the Air!

Knight in Shining Apron is the second book in my new Appleton, West Virginia Romantic Mystery series. As you can see by the series name, romance is a huge part of the plot. What is your hero and heroine’s favorite romantic restaurant?apple-blossom 2 free
Apple Blossoms, of course! When Starli Cameron’s first husband died in an accident, she inherited the insurance money and promptly opened the classiest restaurant in West Virginia: Apple Blossoms–even though she can’t cook. With live music, only the best chef and food, it’s the most popular eating establishment around. How could Starli and the new British chef–Sir Joel Peterman-Blair not consider it their favorite?

When did the Joel know Starli was the one?
From the first, umm, rather tense meeting, Joel realized he’d met the woman of his dreams,
the most beautiful creature he’d ever seen. He had a long hill to climb to win her over
with all the problems she’d faced in her past, but Joel was nothing if not confident he and God would blove3 freee able to accomplish that.

When did Starli know Joel was the one?
Starli’s another matter. To many people, Starli comes across as a confident, accomplished, rather cold woman. Due to her unpleasant marriage with her now deceased husband, she hides behind that mask, but inside, and to her closest friends and those who are on the benefiting end of her generosity, she’s warm-hearted, kind and generous.

So, although Joel was appealing to the eye and to her emotions, she was hesitant and reluctant to even consider him as a potential possibility. Learning to trust a man, faith that God could restore her joy, and trusting are big issues for her. But slowly, and then with one final incident, Starli accepts what God–and Joel–is offering. No reservatEngland freeions!

Where will Joel and Starli go on their honeymoon–or is there a wedding?
Most definitely Italy, France and back to England to tour Joel’s homeland. Joel has the money, and he decidedly plans to spoil Starli!

Who is most romantic, your hero or your heroine?
Most will say Joel because his personality is open, friendly, and a little flirtatious and fun. He’s emotionally happy and at peace with God which, of course, makes him the idea romantic.

Starli, on tlove freehe other hand, grew up in a privileged home by caring, although busy, parents, but when she made the mistake of marrying her first husband, he successfully robbed her of any spontaneous joy she had. Through their married lives, he turned her into a woman who grew to fear men and who thought they couldn’t be trusted. Deep inside her is a longing to find a love such as her friend Toni DeLuca-Perrin has, but she has no faith it will happen. Joel is an attraction, but is he as good as he seems?

Only Joel’s gentleness and strength of character can win her over–if he doesn’t allow his friendliness to, uh, other females cause a rift between them that can’t be corrected.

What’s the most romantic present your hero ever bought your heroine?ice skater2
Joel might think the balloon ride they take–and it was funhot air balloon2 free and different.

Starli on the other hand treasures the tiny ice-skating crystal charm that Joel not only gave her one time, but replaced when the first one was–never mind. If you want to know what happens to it, you’ll have to read the book. But rest assured, that present is cherished by Starli as one of her most highly treasured gifts.

He Says It With Flowers

Front Cover1 w apple blossomLove is like a beautiful flower which I may not touch, but whose fragrance makes the garden a place of delight just the same.

–Helen Keller

I thought I’d share just a bit of the charm between Starli Cameron and Sir Joel Peterman-Blair, the co-protagonists in my upcoming release, the second book in the Appleton, West Virginia Mystery series: Knight in Shining Apron.

Joel, being the perceptive person he is, realizes that Starli is affected by beautiful things. Gifts, his efforts to make her smile and laugh, and flowers give her a much-needed sense of being needed and appreciated.

This comes from Chapter Ten after the Appleton mayor asked Starli to do an iceskating exhibition for the town winter fest:

Where was Joel? She hadn’t seen his car when she’d pulled in. Would he stand her up or get busy and forget like Ryan had done more times than she cared to remember? Nervousness clutched at her stomach again. Dear God, what had she gotten herself into? Could she perform without Joel? Impossible with the moves they’d planned together.

But when she stepped out on the edge of the ice, there he was, resplendent in a blue and
silver figure-hugging outfit, his gaze on the shoreline crowd, as if searching for someone.

Her breath caught in her throat. He looked fantastic—a Greek god with his chiseled facial
bones and blond hair. His lean body, firm and muscled, stood out against the colorful crowd.

He turned and a light brightened his blue eyes. His gaze dropped to the violets on her
shoulder, then returned to her face. “This is it, My Love. Let’s go out there and show them
what skating is all about.”

“I’m ready.” Shaky, but said with a willingness that bolstered her courage.

They stood arm in arm, and when at last the announcer began his spiel, Starli felt the
muscles under Joel’s sleeve tense. Her own body responded to the excitement. This was it.

“…iceskates sled free picLadies and gentlemen, our own lovely and tal-ent-ed…Starli Cameron, a-n-d her partner—all the way from Great Britain—Sir Jo-el Peter-man Blair!”

Starli stepped out, with Joel beside her, and they spread out, their fingers touching, the spotlight focused on them. The crowd cheered, but the cheers faded as she wrapped herself in the small world of performance she’d always loved.

Then as the music began their introduction, she slid into position, facing Joel, his gaze riveted on her. They paused then broke into their beginning moves.

As she waltzed into her routine, Starli forgot the crowd, forgot the past, and forgot  everything but the moment with Joel. He never faltered and never sought the limelight for himself. Every movement served to complement and enhance her own. His strong hands lifted her, and Starli’s brain counted one, two, three, before he settled her back on her feet, and they moved on to execute their flying spins in unison. Her spirit exalted with the breathtaking, exhilarating world she and Joel were creating. If her heart hadn’t already been pounding from the excitement, she could have soared into the icy heavens.

When at last the music exploded into its grand finale—as one, they finished with a
spiral, moved back into their ice skating waltz, and Starli floated into a hydro-blade.

The crowd erupted into a roar. Joel lifted her to her feet and raised her hand to the people in
the stands and at the lakeshore. Then he dropped her hand and flung out an arm in
preference to her. Starli gave them a bow, a curtsy, waved, and clasped hands with Joel
once again as he pulled her close. She heard his words—his mouth near her ear—over thViolete
drowning sound of the ecstatic clapping and cheering.

“Thanks for wearing my violets.”

I Have No Talents

If you have a talent, it’s God’s gift to you. If you use that talent, that’s your gift to God.                   –Red Skeleton.

skills talents free

My mother always claimed to have no talents. But that wasn’t true. Not that she lied. No, she really thought that about herself. But I’m here to tell you she had talents. Let me list a few:

  • She was a homemaker, a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Even the children my sister-in-law babysat called her ‘Granny’, and loved doing so.
  • Her meals consisted of good, wholesome, solid food–cannon ball biscuits, beef roast and gravy, whatever veggie your heart desired, and the best cherry cobbler you ever dug a spoon into! You didn’t visit her home without an offer of food.
  • She loved to sing and most times you could hear her singing or humming a favorite song.
  • She was a caring, giving soul. I watched as she used her car to take others less fortunate to the grocery or to the doctor’s. She gave of her own money to those who didn’t needed.

She used her talents well, and I’m sure God said, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

The dictionary defines talent as a “special, natural ability.” That art that comes easier than other people might labor over. A gift that is special and used wisely, can bless others. Talents don’t have to be great or famous. Talents don’t have to be skills like singing or instrumental playing or speaking. They can be something as simple as sharing your best cookies or recipes. Maybe sending cards or making phone calls to the shut ins. Maybe your talent lies in knitting or crocheting a prayer shawl for hurting souls. Or giving to missions.

Why? Because God blessed you with that gift. Something special. Something he knew you could do, and do well.

WMITH Bk Cover small-Modified earringsI remember the time I placed my first WWII Spies book in her hands, the way she smoothed her fingers over it, the love and pride she had that I’d accomplished this goal. Was she jealous? No, she was happy that I could do this.

That book was dedicated to her, and well deserved too. We might not have always agreed, might have had our differences at times, but she was a woman I looked up to, a friend, and a talented, smart woman.

Yeah, she had a talent. A giving, caring talent, something that many don’t have.

Think about it? Do you have a talent that you acknowledge and share with others? Something that others would cast away but that God has bestowed on you to use and use well? A talent that is to be valued and used so that it spreads joy and love and encouragement?

impossible free

I suppose that’s what the scripture was talking about when Jesus told the story of the Parable of Three Talents. Do you think the third man who received the one talent was afraid he’d do it wrong and wouldn’t satisfy his “hard” master? Or was he ashamed of his talent? Or maybe he was just plain lazy! Could it have been he had a selfish attitude–why should I do this so my master will get the money? Or jealous, that he’d been give only one talent? Whatever the reason, he wasted his talent and the opportunity given him.
