Writers, and all creative people, have times where it seems like the creativity stops flowing. Lately I’ve been studying creativity and what get the stream flowing again. Our brains are wired to be productive or creative. The productive brain waves associated with logic, alertness, and reason are called beta waves. Creativity flows with alpha and gamma waves. Here are 10 ways to switch to the alpha/gamma side of the brain.
Avoid stimulants. Coffee, caffeine, and other stimulants will switch off your creativity and switch on gamma waves in your brain. This is great if you’re editing, but avoid the coffee during the creative process.
Exercise. Exercise and movement has been known to stimulate creativity in the brain. If you can’t take time for a complete workout, try walking around the block at a brisk pace to get your alpha waves flowing.
Do something that requires distracted concentration. Something that doesn’t require your full concentration, like housework or another activity, will help you switch to the creative side of your brain.
Do something relaxing. Take a bubble bath. Sit out in the sun. Color one of those adult coloring books. Get a massage. Doing something relaxing will help you become more creative. Creativity doesn’t flourish in a stressful environment.
Turn on some music. Music can relax you and bring your brain into an alpha wave state. Have a playlist for when you write or do another creative activity.
Scents can loosen up creativity. If you use essential oils, diffuse some lavender while you’re working or burn some incense.
Journal. Spend 15 minutes first thing in the morning writing down any thoughts that come to mind. Those thoughts don’t have to be about you current project, but you might find while you’re writing about something else, you’ll have a breakthrough in your current project.
Daydream. Daydreaming is a great way to get into the creative side of your brain. You don’t have to daydream about your current project to make it work. Fantasize about anything that pops into your head.
Brainstorm. If you’re trying to come up with some creative ideas or work out something in your current project, brainstorm with some friends. Let them know that no idea is too silly. Even the craziest ideas can get your creativity flowing to work out your current dilemma in a way you haven’t thought of before.
Pray and Worship. Have you ever wondered why you get your best ideas in church? The reason is because prayer and worship have been known to stimulate alpha and gamma waves. So spend some time with God, and He’ll help you become more creative.
