Even if you read your Bible through twice in a year and pray two hours a day, if you don’t have a close relationship with Jesus Christ, it’s not worth the bother. This next challenge should have come first, but I felt I needed to get everyone started before I posted it.
Become a Radical Christ Follower
Depending on where you are in your walk with God determines how you will go about this, but I’m going to start at the beginning and walk our way through this.
Make Jesus Christ Lord of your life. You can never become a true Christ follower until He becomes Lord. Here are some ways to do that.
Accept Jesus Christ as your Savior. If you have never asked Jesus into your heart to become your Lord and Savior, it doesn’t matter what church you attend or how good you are, you won’t make it to Heaven. The Romans Road is one of the easiest ways to understand salvation and what you have to do to be saved. If your unsure of your salvation, take a moment now to get things right with God.
Make Jesus Lord. You may be thinking that you did that when you got saved, but making Jesus Lord of our lives is a process that takes a lifetime. Pray and ask God to show you what part of your life are you still in the driver’s seat. What part have you not surrendered to God. Then determine to give it to God. Here’s one of my favorite video clips that illustrate this better than I ever could.
Deal with any Secret Sin. If an image came to your mind as soon as you read this, then you know what I’m talking about. If not, don’t try to berate yourself looking for what’s wrong in your life. Just ask God to show you if there’s anything you don’t see. Here’s some ways to deal with a sin you can’t seem to conquer:
Ask God to forgive you every time you sin. Don’t resist Him when you fail. Move toward Him. He loves you and sent His son to die on the cross so you can have forgiveness and freedom.
Walk in freedom. God has given you freedom from sin not a license to sin. To better understand this, read Romans 6.
Confess your sin to an accountability partner. Find someone you can trust to admit where your struggle is. Sin festers and grows in the darkness. Bring it to light, and most of the battle will be won. This link has some advise on choosing someone to be accountable to.
James 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
Get rid of what causes you to sin. If your sin involves being online, use online accountability software such as Covenant Eyes or X3 Watch. Personally, I think every Christian should have this software even if they aren’t normally tempted in these areas because Satan uses the Internet so effectively.
What Would Jesus Do? It’s more than a cliché on t-shirts and bracelets. It might be easier to say, “What would Jesus have me do in this situation?” When we start involving Jesus in our decision making process, He will become Lord of our lives.
There’s an old novel, In His Steps, that started the whole What Would Jesus Do movement. Right now, it’s free on Kindle. I highly recommend it.
